• Cambodia Gambling Halls

There is an interesting history to the Cambodia gambling halls that lie just across the dividing line from next door Thailand, in which gambling den wagering is not allowed. Eight gambling halls are established in a generally tiny area in the metropolis of Poipet in Cambodia. This conclave of Cambodia gambling dens is in a perfect spot, a three to 4 hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 largest gambling centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a thriving business with Thai laborers and travelers from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The astonishing income accrued from the gambling dens ranges from 7.5 million dollars to more than twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a number of restrictions requirements for gambling den ownership. Ownership is presumed to be largely Thai; however, financial sources are ambiguous. The borders are ceremoniously open from 0900 to 1700, and though visas are for all intents and purposes needed to cross, there are methods and means around this, as is true of many border crossings.

The original Cambodia gambling halls premiered in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were forced to close in the late nineties, leaving just one casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, an anchored boat gambling den, features one hundred and fifty one armed bandits and 60 gaming tables. The Naga gambling den never closes with forty two tables of mini-punto banco, four tables of vingt-et-un, 10 of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The first gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in 1999 and the Golden Crown soon followed. There are one hundred and fifty slots and five table games at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slots and sixty eight tables at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights three hundred slot machine games and 70 tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machines and ninety six gaming tables, including eighty seven baccarat chemin de fer (the most beloved game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machine games and sixty six of the familiar gaming tables, as well as 1 table of Casino Stud Poker. An additional of the eight casinos in Poipet, again in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slot machine games and ninety seven games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an all-inclusive vacation and hotel complex that features numerous amenities on top of the gambling den, which provides ten thousand square feet of 130 slot machine games and 88 tables.
